Sequel to the calendar released by the newly constituted governing council of Obafemi Awolowo University detailing the process of the appointment of the new Vice Chancellor of the institurion in July.
Chairman, Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) OAU Chapter, Comrade Ademola Oketunde said the union stll doubt the capacity of the council under the Chairmanship of Dr. Yemi Ogunbiyi to ensure a transparent process in the selection of the VC.
Oketunde disclosed this when contacted by Ife City News reporter on the newly constituted governing council to oversee the appointment of new VC for the university
SSANU members thronged the street of the university last year to cleberate the dissolution of the governing council of the institution by Federal Government.
He said ” we can’t trust the governing council of the institution because the previous once betrayed us, we do not have issue with the members of the council but we don’t trust the council as an entity”
He also explined that Non Academic Staff Union, (NASU) OAU chapter and SSANU OAU chapter did not file any suit against Professor Ayobami Salami but rather the university management, that Professor Salami only joined himself as Co-defendant.
“We do not have any issue with Prof Salami, If the process that brought him then was legal, we would have given him our maximum cooperation. But, when a process is illegal, the product will also be illegal, as I speak to you the case has been transferred to National Industrial Court, Akure and I promise you that we would not relent”, he said
He also urged the governing council to work up to expectations and that it is too early to judge the credibility of the council.
He said, “We are expecting free and fair conduct from them and we urge them to do so.”
Oketunde also said if the council disappoint the union, they will not hesitate to start another protest “if justice don’t prevail, OAU workers shall embark on another protest, we want sanity on campus, OAU needs VC with unquestionable integrity”
He also commended the Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Anthony Elujoba for putting everything in place to ensure stable calendar
He said “the Acting VC, in his capacity has done better within a short period of time, the school gate has not been shut for a second since his appointment, this is the kind of person we are calling for in order to have peace on campus and a stable calendar”, he added.
It would be recalled that protest by workers in last year June has its roots in the process of appointment of a new vce chancellor for the University.
