By Adejumo Kabir

There are strong indications that the Athletes that represented Obafemi Awolowo University and qualified for Nigeria Universities Game (NUGA) after Pre- NUGA that took place in University of Ilorin some weeks ago may boycott the upcoming NUGA at University of Markurdi (UAM).

Ife City News was reliably gathered that some Athletes have openly expressed their grievances to the university management over alleged maltreatment experienced  during Pre -NUGA.

One of the Athletes who spoke with our reporter on condition of anonimity said they have agreed to boycott NUGA if the university management are unable to guarantee their well-being and payment of necessary allowances.

He added “we may not be able to go on with the NUGA, at the moment we have tried our best and we cannot accommodate a lot of anomalies going on, we cannot continue to tolerate neglects despite putting our best for the glory of the university”

Meanwhile, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Professor Mrs. Grace Akinola, in telephone interview said that the sport committee did not submit their proposal in time.

According to her “they ought to have submitted their proposal long time ago, everything in the university  has procedure, they ought to write the Vice Chancellor through Sport Council and the VC will meet with Bursar before money will be disbursed from the account of the university. They told me they cannot submit proposal until after Pre NUGA because they do not know whether they will qualify or not.

“I advised them to look for money that even the Students’ Union Electoral Commission who also submitted their budget late sourced for money to run the election. They were paid a day to the final day of election. I also told the sport council not to make the athletes suffer because Makurdi is far away from Ife compare to Ilorin. They told me they will get back to me but I am yet to see them “. She said.
