Obafemi Awolowo University ( OAU) , Ile -Ife computer assembly plant is redefining the Nigeria universities capacity in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) with wide network consisting of a continually expanding fiber optic backbone 23 Intra – network subnets and wireless access clouds .
Mr Ajao Kolade, an official of OAU computer unit told Ife City News during the week adding that the unit has been actively involved in the process of building one of the fastest growing networks in the country and perhaps Sub Sahara Africa.
OAU commissioned her mini assembly plant, which is apparently the first in any African University, on May 21, 2006 and was donated by the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC).
The plant, according to Kolade was not established to compete with assemblage industries, rather to advance computer assemblage technological research and train students on hardware manufacturing and assemblage.
He added that the mini assembly is also serving as an outsourcing unit for companies who want to outsource some of their assembly items which may not be computer hardware alone.
According to him the plant is boasting the already existing information technology and communications unit of the university and users in the university environment are quite familiar with the hardware and software which has generated confidence in handling the tool of modern age
Kolade said “its commitment has widened and re-opened the exposure of staff and students to the challenges of education in the 21st century which distinguished OAU from other varsities as leading ICT university in Africa.
“Universities all over the world are given the functions of teaching and conducting research into what will be beneficial to their students, host communities and the country in general. The National Universities Commission (NUC) in its rating list recently released adjudged OAU as best, particularly in research and information technology and communications”. He said.
