OAU Workers Meet Over Unpaid Allowances

By Adejumo Kabir

The Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) held a Congress last Friday, to discuss unpaid allowances and the university management failure to promote members as at when due.

The unions after the congress called for immediate implementation of payment of allowance that has been approved since 2013 by the Federal Government.

Workers claimed that they have been cheated and they left with no choice than to hold the university management responsible for the unpaid allowances, promotion of members, and payments of workers in the university staff school (OAU International School)

A member of  NASU who spoke to Ife City News popularly referred to as  Mama NASU said the non-academic staffs have not been given required priority in the university.

She said “federal government restored normalcy to this institution after our protest in 2016, we were given Acting VC, Professor Anthony Elujoba who has been trying in his best to ensure that the university has a stable academic calendar, many Academic Staff Union of the University (ASUU) members have been promoted as Professors, yet, NASU/SSANU promotions are left undone, this is unfair to those who participated actively in 2016 struggle”.

Also, a SSANU member, Mr. Kolade Setofunmi told our reporter that the appointment of new Vice Chancellor for the institution cannot be settled except the union members receive their payment alleging that the university Bursar, Mrs. Ronke Akeredolu has been playing on our intelligence for long.

The union also expressed their displeasure over the activities of the Governing Council led by Dr. Yemi Ogunbiyi for not taking the unions serious on the issue affecting the varsity.

Chairman NASU, Comrade Wole Odewunmi stated that the leadership of the union is working tirelessly to ensure that the interests of members are safeguarded.

Meanwhile, SSANU Chairman OAU chapter, Comrade Ademola Oketunde has said the union is not in any way interested in the closure of the institution but the university authority must respond to swiftly to demands of the union saying the union request are “ reasonable and logical”.

He said “We can assure you that this semester will be successful without interruption, we only demand payment of our members allowances, promotion of members and also payment of staffs in OAU intentional school”, Oketunde said.
