OAU Ag. VC Urges Popular Participation in Student Unionism

The Acting Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Professor Anthony Elujoba has encouraged the student of the institution to participate in the students’ union body activities.

The Professor of Pharmacy disclosed this in his welcome address to newly admitted students during the orientation programme for 2016/2017 session organized by the Division of Students’ Affairs.

Professor Elujoba said, the university administration believes in responsible students unionism where students could develop their potentials as leaders.

“Our administration early this year see the need to have a union body, we encouraged and mobilized the students’ populace to enthrone their leaders by popular participation. We believe that the participation of students in unionism will add value to the university and produce responsible leadership beyond the confines of the university.

I had missed the company of the students’ union for the most part of my tenure but I am glad that my successor will not suffer this need”, he said.

He further appealed to the students not to forget their primary aim of coming to the university, which is not to only to obtain good university degree, but also at the stipulated and record time by avoiding situations that can lead to closure of school.

“Avoid violent demonstrations and confrontational acts against the administration. It is better to consult and dialogue in a round table manner, than resorting to flagrant disregard to constituted authorities. It is expected that the students union will join hands with the administration of the new management after mine to maintain a peaceful academic environment for smooth passage from studentship to alumni status by everyone of you”.
