7 Nigerians Get Another Chance Of Life After Open Heart Surgery At OAUTH

The cardiac surgical team Of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex(OAUTHC) has successfully performed open heart surgeries to seven Nigerians and 5 closed heart surgeries.

The surgeries included the repair of a 10- month-old boy with Type 1A truncus arteriosus, the very first successful repair of truncus arteriosus in Nigeria.

Ife City News in  an interview with one of the OAUTCH Cardiothoracic Surgeon From , Dr Uvie Onakpoya said the teaching hospital complex had successfully performed 12 open heart surgeries as well as 14 closed heart surgeries in 2016 and this year has  recorded another heart surgeries to seven Nigerians and 5 closed heart surgeries.

He explained that the  success story of the surgical operations were achieved based on the competence of the cardiac surgical team and cardiology unit who work in very close partnership with the International Congenital Heart Centre of Sheba Medical Centre, Israe,l to provide world- class care at very low cost.

He stated  further that the  scope of surgical operations include the whole range of congenital heart surgeries including closures of patent ductus arteriosus, atrial septal defects, ventricular septal defects, total corrections of tetralogy of Falot, repairs of atrioventricular septal defect and valve repairs amongst others.

He added that they routinely implant pacemakers to treat symptomatic bradyarrythmias.
