Ife Culture Prohibits Umbrella Usage in Ooni’s Palace

Weather raining or sunning, using umbrella to cover head is prohibited in the palace of Ooni. Such practice is the exclusive preservation of any sitting Ooni of  Ife. Ife City News learnt on Sunday.

One of the Ooni’s Palace Guards popularly called Emese, Ilesami Kolawole said this while giving instructions to the tourists across the globe who thronged the city for Annual World Ifa Festival.

He called on Ifa worshiper who came from various countries to celebrate the annual festival not to use umbrella inside the palace, saying it is against the tradition.

Kolawole told the tourists to keep their umbrella, saying it is believe that once anyone is the palace, everybody is under shield of Oduduwa.

H said “when strangers come into the palace and use their umbrellas, we don’t harass them, we only tell them it is against our tradition and they always abide by it”

“Nothing bad will happen if someone uses the umbrella but it is our tradition and we want to keep it that way.”

He added that it is only the Ooni that is permitted to use umbrella inside the palace.
