A renowned Journalist and Public Affairs Analyst, Mr. Edmond Obilo has said that main developmental challenges in Nigeria remained poor leadership.
Edmond Obilo disclosed this at the OAU Students’ Union Political Symposium and Magazine Launch to mark this Year June 12, Democracy Day.
Obilo said it is regrettable that late Chief Manshood Abiola, MKO was not announced by National Electoral Commission (NEC) as President in 1993 despite the clear winning of the election until Gen. Ibrahim Babangida annulled the election on the 23rd of June, 1993.
He told the students that June 12 is not specifically for the celebration of Late Abiola but for remembrance of the sacred day that Nigeria witnessed the freest election.
“We don’t need to celebrate Abiola, we should rather celebrate the day because Abiola got his wealth through the help of the military. The same Abiola castigated Late Chief Obafemi Awolowo through Concord Newspaper and later , he got killed by his friends”.
He condemned the Nigeria political system for its inability to have leaders who will sail the affairs of the country without diverting public funds into their pocket.
Obilo advised students to learn from Abiola’s story as they are going to the outside world.
“You all are global giants preparing to emerge in future, I will advise you to follow principles of life without witch hunting anyone in order for your day to last. I am happy to be with you today”, he said
