June 12: OAU Students Opposes Questionable Politicians as Guest Lecturers

By Adejumo Kabir

Students of Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife has urged the Students Union leaders to review the choice of the guest lecturers to be invited for the June 12 Public Lecture to be organised by the union next week.

Students who spoke with Ife City News on Monday, Aderibigbe Kola, Ibraheem Adejobi and Ogunkola Sheun said inviting people of questionable character to the university will negate what June 12 and the ideals of the university stand for.

Reactions trailed  the late Sunday night announcement by the Public Relations Officer of the Students’ Union, Okediji Simon Zuma  while addressing  the university community about the June 12 symposium and magazine launch coming on the 12th of June, 2017.

Guests to be expected at the symposium as announced by the SU PRO includes; Deputy Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives; Rt. Honourable Lasun Yussuf, Speaker of Osun House of Assembly; Rt. Honourable Najeem Salam, and Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly; Rt. Honourable Mudashiru Obasa among others.

After making the public announcement, the residents of Fajuyi hall, challenged the PRO to defend the integrity of the politicians they are inviting for the symposium but the PRO responded saying “I cannot defend the integrity of other person other than myself. Come to Congress on Wednesday to register your grievances”, Zuma responded.

One of the students of the hall said that the listed people coming to the symposium are people that tremble when they hear about OAU Students’ Union.

They emphasized that the Union should rather celebrate revolutionists who are more committed to democratic development, qualitative education, and better welfare for workers and the people of Nigeria.
