Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Students Union Executives have disagreed with the postponement of the Congress earlier scheduled to hold on 7th of June to 13th of June in release signed by the President of the Students’ Union, Oyekan Ibukun and Secretary General, Boluwajaye Adeoluwa.
Speaking with the Secretary General of the Union, Adeoluwa, after who cited some provisions of the constitution said the president of the union is empower call congress and fix appropriate time deemed to be in the best interest of the union.
The secretary said the president, Oyekan Ibukun said adduced excuses which includes inauguration of the new Vice Chancellor on the 7th of June which he has intention of attending the congress .
“He wants VC to be available, he sees having congress on the date one of the sponsoring authorities of the union is been inaugurated as a disregard and disrespect and therefore new date for congress shall be Tuesday, 13th of June. I told him to inform the PRO, so he can go around halls to make announcement, which he said the PRO is already aware, so I am surprised.”, the Secretary General of the Union said.
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the Union, Okediji Zuma and the Assistant Secretary General, Oyebanjo Oluwaseun , distanced themselves from postponement.
The PRO said: “it’s is unfortunate that I was never part of the meeting where the postponement was decided. At this point in time, we must then begin to ask questions why we can’t hold our congress as planned. Postponing the much anticipated congress will only succeed in subjecting us to hot criticism and the gradually waning students interest in the union.”, the PRO wrote.
Also, the ASG, Oluwaseun popularly known as Siewen , told our reporter that “The reasons behind this postponement till now, they have not been able to state it categorically. Their arguments up till now have not been substantiated. I can be quoted anywhere. I know nothing about the postponement and will never even support the idea of the postponement considering so many things.
