The students’ union of Obafemi Awolowo University has condemned the widespread exploitative speculation of the Federal Government of Nigeria’s plan to increase tuition fees being paid by Nigerian students across all Federal universities in the country.
This was disclosed in a release made available to our reporter by the President of the Union, Oyekan Ibukun.
“We have not only found such plan very laughable but overwhelming oppressive. The rumour has been on the media for couple of days and the Union is left with no choice other than to conclude that the federal government is indeed insensitive and insouciant to the plight of the masses in the face of the current unpalatable economic situation in the country.”
The union further used the release to sound strong warning to the federal government and all university management to erase such idea from their options of generating revenue to run the university.
They also demand federal government of Nigeria to come out open and rekindle their sincerity and commitment to execution of t
he 26% budgetary allocation to educational sector as stipulated by UNESCO.
