By Sodiq Lawal

The Curator, National Museum Ile Ife, Mr Joseph Ogundele has urged the Federal Government to enforce and sustain legislative protection of Nigeria’s cultural heritage.

According to the Senior Education Officer, Mr Awowoyin Rasheed who spoke on behalf of the Curator, told Ife City News, that government should enforce legislative protection of heritage museum, archives and libraries, in order to sustain and promote cultural revival.

He said if the government enforce legislative protection of museum, it will go a long way to discourage Western cultural values that are not in consonant with the Nigerian way of life.

He emphasised the need to establish heritage clubs like Seed of Africa Club, where issues of cultural heritage would be discussed.

Rasheed said that the clubs would serve as a means of transmission of both tangible and intangible cultural heritage.

He called on Nigerians to resuscitate the spirit of self-confidence and self-esteem which he noted would boost development in the country.

“It is a call for a conscious battle against various forms of cultural imperialism and economic dependence”

“Our culture is our way of life which even foreigners can use to identify us, so it should not be bastardised,” he stressed.
