Banking services of Wema Bank, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife branch has been suspended over false allegation against a student of the institution.
Onuche Caleb, a 400 level student of Faculty of Law was said to have been falsely alleged by the Wema Bank in OAU campus of fraudulent transaction of N10 Million which led to the student arrest on 12th of July, 2017.
It was gathered that Onuche was transferred to the Nigeria Police Force Criminal Investigative Division , Ikoyi, Lagos.
However, following the intervention of university management, through the security unit who went to Lagos to ascertain the veracity of the allegation, the fraudulent transaction was traced to a staff of the bank who was immediately arrested while the police later released Caleb after spending days in custody.
Angered by the development, OAU Student Union suspended the activities of the bank on Monday, in an attempt to negotiation and seek justice for the law Students, Caleb who according to the union was subjected to torture and public ridicule.
The union also blamed the bank for not informing the university management before arresting the alleged student.
Meanwhile, a staff of the bank, Tunde Ali who spoke with our reporter said the bank is making efforts to settle the matter amicably and has resolved to discuss with all affected parties.
