OAU Off-Campus Students Groans Over Hoodlums Attack

In recent time, robbery cases in off campus is becoming more rampant with the students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife been vulnerable to the attacks.

Tunbosun Akintola, a student of department of Economics, who resides out side the campus told our reporter that in one of the robbery attacks that happened last week Sunday around 3:30am, her phone and laptops were taken away by the armed robbers.

Another student of Faculty of Law who spoke to us under the condition of anonymity said: “we are being robbed at Ede road always. My neighbors who have friends on campus have moved down to campus to squat with their colleagues. We have complain on several occasions but the students’ union security officers and OAU management have been handling things with levity,” she said.

Reacting, the students union security committee legal adviser, Olaoye Gideon, who spoke with our reporter, said that the institution management is supposed to be responsible for the security of students off campus.

“We have had several meetings with the police including the state commissioner, we want them to build police booth around main campus”

According to our investigation, we confirmed that the students union leadership met with the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. John Abang on the 27th of June, 2017 to register their displeasure over the unpleasant experience of students residing outside campus.

The Deputy commissioner at the meeting promised to brief the commissioner and ensure that the police are more effective in the affected areas.

However, findings revealed that the Deputy commissioner of police has failed to fulfill his promise as one of the police in Moore who spoke to us under the condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak said  that the Deputy commissioner though has been to Ife  but not to discuss the security of OAU students in off campus.

The Dean of students affairs, Professor Ishaq recently said that the university authority is laison with the security agencies to ensure safety of lives adding that the off campus security is more challenging that main campus.

Findings shows that increasing number of students admitted every year is complicating acomodation problem which is forcing students to seek acomodation outside .

According to the available records, available bed spaces in the university is 8,968 which is primarily available for freshmen and finalists.

However, the question begging for answer mong OAU students; is when would the security challenges would be finally resolve in off campus.
