Reaction Trails Evacuation of OAU SUB Surroundings Business Outlets

By Adejumo Kabir

Following the evacuation of business outlets surrounding  the Obafemi Awolowo University Students’ Students Union Building, students have been expressing dissenting views over the development.

At the resumption for the new semester, students met a new outlook of the union building. The decision of the students union leaders cannot be disconnected from the relaxation center the union is planning to construct at the surrounding.

However, students who have begun to feel the brunt of the evacuation are now lamenting the stress the evacuation is imposing or them to get some items that were already available at the SUB business centers.

A student of department of Economics told IFE CITY NEWS that SUB used to be a major commercial centre before the school was vacation.

“It is so disheartening that one of the major commercial areas on campus has been evacuated and the building is now scanty. This is not a welcome development because students in the school will have to walk down to market to get their needed items”

Ige Busari, a student of Computer Science said “the union is greedy with such decisions. If truly they want to construct relaxation centre we should have seen the traces.”

However, another student who pleaded anonymity to avoid being victimised alleged the varsity management of being part of the evacuation.

“We cannot trust the union, they have become tools used by management to fight the students. Management may order the union officers to take such step without considering over 30,000 students who patronise the place daily”, he said.

But a student member of the OAU Student parliament who pleaded anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the matter said “ the business centers are illegal existing structure that is disrupting the beauty of the SUB surroundings, removing them is a bold step, in fact the union must be commended for such courage”.
