The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife has proscribed the activities of the students’ union.
In a circular hurriedly released today and signed by the university Register, Dotun Awoyemi announced that the institution has proscribed the union following the recalcitrant attitude of the union leaders.
According to the circular,”following the incessant and unruly behaviour during the congresses of the students union and the recalcitrant attitude of their leadership, it has become inevitable for the university administration to suspend the activities of the students union of Obafemi Awolowo University.”
The university alleged the students union of manifesting the following the unacceptable misdemeanors:
“President supporters beating up the Speaker on June 29 and 30 of 2017, Speakers supporters beating up the President on September 15, 2017, fighting between the Vice President and Director of Socials in which head butts and stabbing with broken bottles were recorded at the meeting of union executive on September 5, 2017, Vandalization of the vehicles Ekiti State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists on July 14, 2017, vandalization of NURTW vehicles on October 6, 2017”
“Forceful release of students under investigation from police custody of October 6, 2017, Arrant dispensing of rumour of fees increase and fabricating threat of invasion by cultists in order to deceive and falsely gain acceptance among students populace to precipitate crises capable of disrupting the academic activities of the university, conveyance of conflicting meetings between CEC and SRC with resultant open confrontations and violence; and recent serious fighting and open fracas at the meetings of the union (in which the president of the union was physically assaulted on November 1, 2017) and if not promptly addressed, could lead to a fatal consequences.”
The management explained that the above reasons led to an emergency meeting held on Monday, November 6, 2017, to inevitable conclusion that the activities of the students union be suspended until further notice.
The union leadership are also advised to handover all properties of the union to the Dean of Students Affairs, Professor Isiaka Aransi with immediate effect.
However, OAU management enjoins the students to go about their lawful activities unhindered while the suspension persists.
“Any students or group of students who parades himself or herself as leaders or representatives of the students in causing disruption to the university activities, under whatever disguise, will be dealt with according to the university rules and regulations, and codes of conduct, and according to laws of the land”.
