The students’ union action committee, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-ife, has called for aggressive campaign against armed security agents on the campus.
Chairman of the committee, Dunnex Samuel, in a letter argued that the presence of the armed security agents will create tension and anxiety in the university environment.
The action committee expressed concern that the arrangement will encourage all form of abuse, harassment and intimidation.
“Such approach will make it even difficult to verify the identity of the security to be held responsible in any attack and the hoodlums terrorising the campus community may also disguising to perpetrate attacks in the campus. As it is now, the cases of assault on students for alleged indecent dressing are at an alarming rate and armed security will just complicate the matter.” The committee said.
The committee explained that experiences from other campuses operating armed private security are not palatable and the university authority must learn from those experiences.
It would be recall that there was a shooting in the new market area of the university few days ago and those behind the attack could not be identified and the university authority is yet to brief the public about the incident.
